NASHP’s Hospital Cost Tool: Version 3.0

The National Academy for State Policy (NASHP), in collaboration with Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy and Mathematica Policy Research, with support from Arnold Ventures, will launch an update to the interactive Hospital Cost Tool in December 2023.

The tool provides information on a range of financial and operating measures for nearly 5,000 individual hospitals from 2011 to 2021 (soon through 2022). Users gain insights on hospital performance calculated using hospitals’ annual Medicare Cost Reports submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In addition to including 2022 data, the updated tool will include additional metrics on labor costs, capital related expenses, and other features that are responsive to state policymakers’ questions.

NASHP’s interactive Hospital Cost Tool provides anyone from policymakers to researchers with insights into hospitals’ expenditures on patient care services, including labor costs over time, and other expenses not related to patient care that affect hospital operating performance. The tool also shows how these costs relate to both the hospital charges (list prices) and the actual prices paid by health plans.

Join this webinar for an overview of the updated tool, including critical data measures, analyses of information from the tool, and how the tool may be useful in informing state policymaking.
