In return for tax exempt status, nonprofit hospitals must perform community health needs assessments (CHNA) and report community benefit investments to the Internal Revenue Service. Some states are working to hold hospitals accountable and ensure that their community benefit investments truly improve community health and advance equity. NASHP provides states with resources and support to help maximize their hospitals’ community benefit investments.
