How Are States Using Opioid Settlements?

Explore the resources on this page to find out how states are allocating and administering opioid settlement dollars.

The opioid crisis is one of the most urgent and complex issues facing states today, with overdose fatalities reaching an all-time high in 2021. Settlements from pharmaceutical companies and others involved in the distribution and sale of prescription opioids are beginning to flow to states, providing new resources to respond to this crisis.

Overall, it’s estimated that more than $50 billion will be awarded to states and localities through these settlements. Each state is developing processes and administrative structures for allocating funding, identifying needs, gathering input, and providing guidance on priorities and spending activities.
