To better understand hospital costs, the National Academy for State Policy (NASHP) in collaboration with Rice University Baker Institute for Public Policy and Mathematica Policy Research, with support from Arnold Ventures, has launched the interactive Hospital Cost Tool. The tool provides data on a range of measures to offer insights on hospital profitability and breakeven points that have been calculated using hospitals annual Medicare Cost Reports. The dataset includes over 4,600 hospitals nationwide with annual data from 2011 through 2019.
This demonstration will provide an overview of the tool by highlighting critical data measures, analyses of the information, explains why its important and how it may be useful in informing state policymaking.
