The National Academy for State Policy (NASHP), in collaboration with Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy and Mathematica Policy Research, with support from Arnold Ventures, launched an update to the interactive Hospital Cost Tool in February 2025.

The tool provides information on a range of financial and operating measures for nearly 5,000 individual hospitals from 2011 to 2023. Users gain insights on hospital performance calculated using hospitals’ annual Medicare Cost Reports submitted to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

In addition to including 2023 data, the updated tool now offers metrics on hospital prescription drug costs and charges. The tool has a new look that is easier to navigate and includes downloadable charts and more.
