For the first time, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved a Medicaid state plan amendment (SPA) to establish palliative care services provided in non-hospital settings as a Medicaid covered service. Community palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness, and provided in non-hospital and community settings across the continuum of care. By adding community palliative care as a preventive service in its Medicaid state plan, Hawaii is the first state to be able to comprehensively cover these palliative care services for its Medicaid beneficiaries.
