State-only Webinar: Analyses of Private Equity Ownership in Hospitals and Provider Groups across Four States

by NASHP

An increasing body of research indicates there has been, and continues to be, growth of private equity investment in health care provider groups and hospitals. And a growing number of states have direct experience addressing issues caused by private equity business decisions driven by their fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders, which can be misaligned with a health care mission.

However, even with examples of increasing care prices, decreasing medical staff, and service line or hospital closures, it’s not always clear what’s causing the changes. Transactions between private equity and hospitals or medical providers are private business agreements, and, unless explicitly required in state law, they don’t need to be disclosed to the state.

To highlight the presence of private equity within different state health markets, the Commonwealth Fund supported NASHP to partner with national expert researchers at Brown and Harvard Universities to analyze available data across four states. Pennsylvania, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Texas have diverse markets that offer insight for other states. The findings indicate private equity involvement across each of these states in both hospitals and provider groups.

Join this webinar to learn more about this research. Discussions will focus on how researchers created state-specific data and visualizations on private equity hospital and specialty practice acquisitions, the rate of specialists in private equity-owned practices, private equity trends, and more. There will also be time to note actions states can take to expand their understanding of private equity in their healthcare markets.

Please note this is a state-only call; therefore, only current state government employees directly employed by the state will be approved to attend.
