State Efforts to Extend Medicaid Postpartum Coverage

Updated December 8, 2025

Extending Medicaid postpartum coverage beyond 60 days is a key state strategy to improve maternal health and address the maternal mortality crisis. This interactive map and chart summarizes state laws, Medicaid waivers, and state plan amendments designed to extend coverage during the postpartum period.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 provided states the option to extend Medicaid postpartum coverage from 60 days to 12 months. Under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, this option was made permanent.
