Starting individuals on opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment in hospital emergency departments can help reduce the risk of overdose death and strengthen the continuum of care by providing ongoing connections to treatment services. While this approach has been adopted in many hospital settings across states, Medicaid payment and sustainability remain challenging for state leaders.
