It is widely recognized that many patients in the United States, even those with health insurance, do not receive appropriate, evidence-based health care. Many states recognize a significant opportunity and need to improve health care quality not only to improve individual care experiences but also to contain costs, expand access, improve population health, and improve health system performance.
NASHP's work on quality improvement assists state officials in efforts to ensure that the health care delivery system meets patients’ needs and is based on the best scientific knowledge so that care is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable. NASHP’s quality improvement initiatives have focused on state public-private partnerships that have developed strategic agendas to improve health system performance, other aspects of high performance health systems, reducing racial and ethnic health disparities, and improving the delivery of specific services including early childhood development and mental health services.
NASHP’s State Quality Improvement Partnership Toolbox, which includes descriptions and resources for ten leading state public-private quality improvement partnerships, along with links to other Web resources and a discussion forum, is available at athe State Quality Improvement Toolbox under Resources on the right. The toolbox’s development was funded by The Commonwealth Fund.
